I used to keep two trash bins next to my desk – one for recycling and one for waste. As was often the case I would fill up the recycling bin and put very little into the waste bin. Since I rarely work with anything wet, toxic, perishable or dusty I decided to consolidate the two bins into a single bin. From there, whenever I go to take out the trash I simply sort out the paper – which is the bulk – and toss the rest. Since I’m the person responsible for taking out my own trash it’s an easy step to remember, and the extra added effort pays off in the new clean space I’ve gained around my desk.
