San Francisco finalizes Wi-Fi deal with EarthLink, Google

San Francisco will get 5 percent of the subscription revenue — a cut estimated to be worth about $300,000 annually. That figures indicates EarthLink expects the Wi-Fi service to generate about $6 million in annual sales.EarthLink also will pay the city $600,000 for right-of-way access and $40,000 annually to place Wi-Fi equipment on street poles.

i’m hoping there’s provisions in the contract that keep earthlink from having exclusive rights to provide wifi city-wide. if not, there could be a monopoly hold on what some would consider a public utility.
